Etymology

Gr. n. mukes – fungus, Gr. neut. n. plasma – anything formed, N.L. neut. n. Mycoplasma – fungus form; L. n. opalus – opal, N.L. neut. adj. opalescens – opalescent (referring to the opalescent film produced on solid medium)
