Etymology
Gr. n. mukes – fungus, Gr. neut. n. plasma – anything formed, N.L. neut. n. Mycoplasma – fungus form; L. n. leo – a lion, N.L. n. pharynx – throat, N.L. gen. n. leopharyngis (sic!) – of the throat of a lion

Mycoplasmatales – Mycoplasmataceae – Mycoplasma – Mycoplasma leopharyngis (Bovis cluster), closely related to Mycoplasma maculosum (16S rRNA gene sequence similarity – 99.52%) (Fig. 1)
